Our insider tips for indulging in central PEI’s incredible food scene

Here at The Hideout, we’re big fans of celebrating the hard work and delicious products made from our local farmers and food producers. We’re spoiled to live in a region with so many dynamic wineries, craft beer breweries, incredible restaurants and gourmet local food shops all within a half hour drive.

In the spirit of celebrating and supporting local, we wanted to share a list of some of our favourites with Hideout guests. Bookmark these for your next visit to The Hideout and spend an afternoon (or a week!) eating, drinking, and celebrating all things local on PEI!

Foxy Fox Coffee house (Crapaud)

Start off your day with a coffee and pastry at Foxy Fox Coffee House & Boutique, just up the road in nearby Crapaud. While you’re in Crapaud, stock up on free-range meats, chicken, local sausages, a range of preserves and cheeses, and all sorts of delicacies at Larkins Farms. Visit the Crapaud General Store to stock up on local organic greens and other produce from our friends at Soleil’s Farm.

Lobster Barn Pub (Victoria-by-the-sea)

If you’re in the mood for seafood, take a jaunt into beloved Victoria-by-the-Sea for oysters at the Landmark Oyster House or lobster rolls at the Lobster Barn or Richards Seafood. For dessert, try local handcrafted chocolates at Island Chocolates.

Spend the afternoon sipping wine at Matos Winery and Distillery, just a few minutes east. Try local UK-style ciders at Riverdale Cidery or honey wine or mead a little further afield at Island Honey Wine in Wheatley River. Check out liqueurs, gin, and other local alcohol at Deep Roots Distillery in Warren Grove.

Further north, you can spend a whole day eating and drinking in New Glasgow. Taste a range of delicious preserves, jams, chutneys, and other delicacies at PEI Preserve Company. Try local ales and stouts at Bogside Brewing or pizza at Stoked Bakehouse, or indulge yourself with a full lobster supper at New Glasgow Lobster Suppers. For a more intimate gourmet meal, try fine dining at The Mill, which also has a small marche selling specialty food items made in-house.

To the west of The Hideout, one of our favourite spots is the Handpie Company in Albany, home to the most delicious savoury and sweet handpies in the world, all made with local PEI ingredients. In Borden you’ll find Lone Oak, a celebrated local brewery. Up in Rose Valley, visit Barnone Brewery on Thursdays for their famous growler nights. And if you’re looping through Summerside, visit The ADL Store for the best cheeses, local butter, milk, and dairy products on PEI, Evermoore Brewery for more local brew and delicious pub fare, Samuel’s Coffee House for good coffee, the Summerside Farmers Market for local food and produce on Saturday mornings, and then wind your way back through New Annan for European croissants and other pastries (and amazing cycling gear and high-end bicycles) at Knead a Brake.
