Introducing the Hideout Writer-in-Residence Program

In 2024, we launched a formal Hideout writer-in-residence program to complement the fall and spring residencies. The WIR program is designed to offer one Canadian writer an opportunity to spend a week at The Hideout to engage in new work. Hideout writers-in-residence are not required to make any sort of public presentation, though we will assist writers to engage with the Island writing community if they so desire. The key goal of the program is simply to allow the writer an opportunity to remove themselves from their daily responsibilities to write, reflect, and recharge.

Our inaugural Hideout writer-in-residence was Montreal author Christopher DiRaddo, followed by Ontario-based novelist Christine Higdon in 2025.

At the moment, Hideout writers-in-residence are selected by invitation, so there is no application or call. Should you wish to join us at The Hideout for a spring or fall residency (of between 1-4 weeks), visit the main Hideout residency page for application information, availability, and FAQs.
